Who are we going to write letters to now in Shards of Bravok?
Oooh, another thing I love is passengers who are solely there to commute from one end of the galaxy to another. That leaves endless cycling of possible NPC/PC interactions. Who are they and where are they going? Why did they choose to travel with your crew instead of using some other mode of travel?
Oh and I love the idea of relatively harmless but none-the-less insistent space nuisances, a la tribbles or space barnacles.
I can only imagine a speck of the infinite possibilities of sharing a confined space of some kind with strangers on who you depend for your survival. One thing I’d love to explore further is how people deal with health concerns- like viral/venereal outbreaks in such a confined space- do you isolate that person completely, jettison them (hah), or do you decide to create an inoculation and mandate its dispersal to all organic crew members? What are the medical limitations? Do small crews typically shell out the cash to hire a medical doctor, or do they make due with first aid kits and hope for the best? Cancers due to radiation caused by exploding stars? How do people reproduce- is it frowned upon or encouraged with family planning packages for crew members? What kind of space contraceptives exist (space condoms, if you will)? Are there technological viruses to be concerned about for non-organic crew members, and if so, how are they transferred/treated? Do you have robo-doctors, specifically for your synthetic crew members? How do you treat mental health needs? Oh my god how. That would be fantastic. An onboard psychologist, or a simulated therapist? Haaaah oh and you would need one that is culturally competent- enough to deal with possible existential crises in synthetic crew members and the specific mental/emotional needs of mutated crew members, for example. One size will not fit all. Don’t even start with the fascinating scenarios that arise with multiple cultures coexisting together in one place. Specifically stereotypes and prejudices (positive and negative). That would be ENDLESS FUN.

I love it. That’s what I think. I think it’s important too (just as an aside) to choose the one that makes the most sense for your character’s experience during the campaign and the way they approach their goals. That’s something that I am trying to do more of- instead of being tempted to metagame and choose the perks that make the most tactical sense to me, I’m trying to be as true as possible to what my character would realistically be picking up on their adventure and gradually getting better at according to their concentrated efforts and experiences. I think I did that best with Bubby- I’ll be experimenting more with Mordello on that front the next time we level and/or the next Horizons campaign.
Nicely done! I’m liking how this is shaping up and I’m really excited to see what else you have in store for us! Space is such an interesting story setting- I’ve played in one other space campaign (well, two actually, but that campaign’s character ended up dying pretty early on). What I loved most about it was the confines of the ship forcing comradery or hostility, and the utility of survival in a harsh realm and the sacrifices people must make to simply exist; and the gadgetry and ingenuity and the organizational psychology that is needed to stay emotionally stable in an unfamiliar environment, and the ways we choose to adapt to new environments emotionally and mentally in order to continue moving forward. When I think about space travel, I often think about saving resources that are extremely limited and how a group of humans (or otherwise) would attempt to do so. Since we can’t evolve quickly enough to find sustenance in astroids (even if we could, the vastness of space would make them a little difficult to find!), what better way to deal with that than to change yourself? Now, I’m not talking evolutionary changes- I mean the immediacy of “oh shit, we are 20 years away from our destination and don’t have that kind of food or oxygen.”
So what I always come back to when I think of exploring the world is stasis. The vulnerability of saying goodbye to the present and putting your trust in a device meant to completely incapacitate you for days, months, years. The actual thought of how your life path must diverge from others as you put yourself to sleep- as the lives of those you love continue to move forward. The feeling of stopping your march towards death but sacrificing consciousness to do it- it’s always been something that really scares me and therefore a great interest. What’s up Tite.Writing now because I’m going to kick it soon. Not interesting story, not going to tell it. Want family to know I’m dead and to not wonder like did with Yan. Am definitely dead by time you receive letter. People who delivered were comrades. Maybe delivered it, maybe will collect dust in pack for few weeks until person dead as well though. If pack raided by killer and is reading this- hey. Fuck you, fuck are reading this for. Hope you burn in Halfhollows, root fucker, bloody stool, etc.
Writing you to let know have never been fond. Felt you have sucked for past decade plus extra threnn. Always thought you were lucky one out of all seven, have resented for long, long time. Am over it now. Want you to know love. Am now looking at how futile to think could be like you and live with father making pretty things- not worthwhile anymore to envy birds their flight. Please forgive past ash mouthed words.
Should know did amazing things. Tell family. Finished 33 jobs. Not hot trot, but was done; sister said would never happen, inform how wrong she is. Also in the past months became Explorer, saw crazed lunacy that would never believe. Saw no Kahlnissá has seen- dark stuff. Have known comradery, been well met along way. Mixed bag, but have earned right to be remembered after.
So. Why was with party. Months since first started traveling together… Met in Pike’s Watch. Township in thick of Peacekeepers, Pallmoran presence. Dirty crude shit pile of place. Had just gotten off assignment in South Weyell, didn’t go over so great. Was bloody and everything gone wrong. Influential family. Ended up hitting two extra, shouldn’t have died. Was my fault, got scared. Fully admit. Wrecked reputation with locals, did not receive payment, etc. Was six Doullies to name, three months’ travel from Expanse. Found self in smelly room full of freelancers. No Kahlnissá in sight. Not usual to see us west of Capital City. Gets lonely sometimes. Thought maybe would find mate and settle down somewhere, maybe family. Mother, father met through congregation arrangement, never avid on joining arrangement-end up paying to feed stranger? Ugh. If had gotten chance to start family, would have wanted far from Expanse in place of anonymity, no mother or sister breathing my air.
Party. Started with noble human. Her mate, High Lord of Pelmora, assembled militia to find; mate was piece of work, was sorcery-wielding mass of human remains. Not fooling. Was number x of thousand unspeakable foul shit got caught in. Was most disgusting thing ever seen- Toorlish Ruins, dragonkin, ritual suicide, Halfhollows, Dark Lord of Destruction killed, was child. Grand plot. Long, long story, don’t have parchment. Feel free to embellish. Party start with two Viantu, two Djenndan, human named Dars the Plank. Viantu were good. Dezeva, Tsu’viti. Liked Tsu’viti. Was smart, kind, weird. Eyes nice. Never got chance to know Dezeva. Dead soon. Djenndan, scary pair. Have no shame to say was nervous around. Djenndan social communication style grating. But loyal, kind, good. Hodjai, Sookta. Giants. Polite, eat enemies though. Dars the Plank good. Was straightforward, friendly. Died. Many died. Killed Dolios meatbag monster, together. Dyrakos, funny human, Kishsahat, spitting strong human, there too. Tolerate both, good cooks, made lots food. One human, Sir Dhonin, liked muchly. Was good, quiet, kind. Met in Toorlish ruins. Was shredded, got better. Tsu’viti fixed. Never say goodbye proper. Am sad. Maybe liked him, but am dying, no matter.
Got comrades caught in dream world few weeks ago. Dark sorcery involved. Do not NOT NOT shake stranger hand. Never. Almost killed all. Did get 777 Threnns out of deal though. Survived. Saved by Kalousk and comrades. Kalousk is healer in Pike’s Watch, North of township. Deliver message Tsu’Viti: much love. Remember me, live well.

Another characteristic: when you say something Bubby thinks is obvious, he’ll say ‘Is my name Bubby Nutgrinder?’ And crack his knee.
Bubby makes some damn delicious nut butter. And his boiled nuts? To die for.

This is Bubby, a Human Survivalist who specializes in foraging. I’d love to play him at some point. He’s got a bushy beard and missing teeth! And he has a strong, dirty, nutty odor (which plays a part in his CHA modifier being -4).

@mountaintree, I’m loving these characters. Especially the Black Cat, and the antagonistic Viantu was really descriptive and probably a lot of fun to play with… Nice nice nice. Maybe we will meet a few of these people down the line, eh?
Not even gonna lie to you. I screeched one long screech when I saw all this. This is beyond awesome. I like all the detail, all the description. Especially all the visual description of how she looks and moves! Yesssss. I’m a very visual person, and it really helps to have those examples, those little vignettes that help bring a character into focus. Little hints of something more. I had actually looked up the ‘Sound of my Voice’ character with Evan when I was home for lunch earlier today, and then when I saw you had organized everything into one neat place, it just pleased me so much. SEHR GUT. It’s awesome to have this kind of detail to work off of- especially for drawing, and for adding little details to interactions, and getting a feel for how my character would feel about your character in general, and how she (Lem) would therefore respond or initiate interactions. I love the eye thing- how people don’t know which one to look into. I’m totally bringing that into action next time. And her extensive morning ritual is great! I want to see everyone’s morning rituals! That is so descriptive of a character’s personality. It’s just super cool and I am just super pleased right now. I love Nysteld and I’m feeling pumped about where this is going to go next.
